Located on one of the most popular bar streets in the French Concession in Shanghai, China, BIKINI is a tiny hot dog and sandwich shop run by the El Willy Group.

The design brief from the client came with 3 requests: 1. A touch of “Barcelona” style (imaginative but restrained, simple but brilliant, rational but torn, elegant but casual), 2. Sexy (a touch of spice, super chill, a twist of color) and finally, 3. Representative of the food concept (easy, affordable, modern street food style).

Our main challenge was space, as the shop is a mere 27sqm. The design had to be functional and create a strong visual impact. All the elements were resized to XS to fit this tiny bar.

We chose to work with several distinct materials, a combination of reclaimed wood, white Corian and yellow leather, for a funky touch. Simple white tiles and stainless steel for the kitchen and service area recall the idea of street food, while the shape of the counter top and the side bar brings modernity.

This eclectic combination embodies the feeling of a 70s spaceship food truck, underlined by a whimsical mix of stars and planets on the dark ceiling…. enhancing your galaxy-like experience.
